Mystery Skype Champions!

Today, we participated in our first Mystery Skype. Mystery Skype is a competition between classes located in other areas, anywhere around the world. Our competitors happened to be located not too far from home!

We generated a series of yes or no questions for our competitors. We then used their answers to narrow down their location. We used Google Maps as our main reference, but be we also had access to traditional maps and globes.

Some examples of questions were:
"Do you live in the United States?"
"Do you have snow where you live?"
"Are you located by an ocean?"
"Do you live in the South?"

Our students learned a lot about geography, and about the regions and climates of the United States.

Our competitors were a 4th grade class in Jacksonville, FL. We guessed their location first, so we won our first Mystery Skype!!!

Pictures coming soon!

Ms. Osborne sent the class a picture of our Flat Stanleys with their college students today. They are ready to start their adventure! We can't wait to hear about their travels in a few weeks.

Happy Veterans Day!

Enjoy your day off tomorrow. Don't forget to thank a veteran for your freedom! There are many events going on around town to honor our veterans.

Know a vet? Take them out to eat at one of these many places offering veterans discounts/free meals tomorrow: http://freebies.about.com/od/freefood/tp/veterans-day-free-meals.htm

Veterans in the Classroom

We were so fortunate to have Captain Turnbull and Major Turner visit our classrooms today. They shared great information with our classes, and help our students understand the true meaning of Veteran's Day. Our class learned a great deal about what our military men and women do for us everyday. They also learned the history of Veterans Day, and got to hear first hand accounts of Captain Turnbull's and Major Turner's experiences in the Air Force and Army.

Updates

I got a little behind updating the blog! We have been learning a great deal about plants and ecosystems in the past few weeks. Through our celery experiment, we found that the celery changes colors according to the colored water it was sitting in. We learned the reason this happens is because the celery soaks up the water into its stem, and sends nourishment through the rest of the plant to keep it alive.

Pumpkinology was a great success. We had lots of fun, and pictures will be posted soon.

Mrs. Owen's homeroom class read about Flat Stanley. We "flattened" our own Stanleys and sent them to college! They will be on an adventure at Flagler College for the next few weeks, and will return to us the Monday before Thanksgiving. We can't wait to hear about their adventures. (Ms. Francois's homeroom will complete this activity in the spring).

Keep practicing your multiplication facts in math! We are working hard on becoming Multiplication Masters. So far we have several people who have earned ice cream and one topping. Keep learning those facts!

Impromptu Class Picture

After a little brain break, I told the class to go get in line to go back in the classroom. They all sat on the steps, instead, and said, "Take our picture!" Such a cute little family of students!

Updates

We have been busy little owls in Third Grade. Last week, we completed our Chapter 1 study on addition and subtraction within 1,000. We also began working with collecting data and graphing.

Last Wednesday was Constitution Day. We have been studying the American Revolution in Social Studies, so it was a great day to celebrate the document that was created during this time to protect our rights. We got to take a virtual field trip to the National Archives in Washington D.C. We also learned the Preamble of the Constitution through a fun song from Schoolhouse Rock! (You may have heard this a time or two at the dinner table last week). You can view the video at this link: Schoolhouse Rock Preamble.

Welcome to Third Grade

Welcome to Third Grade, Owen's Owls! I am so excited to start a new year with you.
We had 17 out of 19 students come to Orientation. What a turn out! We're already off to a spectacular start. It was great meeting you all (and seeing some familiar faces from STEM and Champions). We're going to have a "hoot" of a time together.

Invasive Plant Presentation

Today, we learned about the vast number of plants we have here in Leon County. We learned about some "invasive" or bad plants that can harm us, other animals, or overtake other plants. We learned how toe cognizant these plants when we see them, and how to get rid of them appropriately.

Cool School Players

I had the pleasure of getting to see two of our finest in the Cool School Players' performance of "Joust" last night. Great job Alvin and Jazmin!

Lunch at Westcott After the Ballet

Mrs. Owen's Class

Just pondering life with T.K. Wetherell

Zach and Brooks enjoying lunch at Westcott

T.K. Wetherell was president of FSU when Mrs Owen graduated. The kids were obsessed with his statue and thought Mrs. Owen must be really old to have shook his hand at her graduation.

We found the brick Mrs. Owen's graduating class was gifted from her professor, Dr. Clark.
